Protect your business against data theft & ransomware
We’ve performed two large data restores recently for customers who have been targeted by the Cryptolocker ransomware virus. This is a particularly nasty type of ransomware virus that has been emailed to people in huge numbers, particularly targeting the USA and UK. This malware has been associated with a variety of other nasties – backdoor Trojans, downloaders, spammers, password-stealers, ad-clickers and the like.
Decent antivirus and firewall protection are the first lines of defence against this horribly disruptive type of virus attack. Commonsense is also a massively important factor – do NOT click on links in spam emails or download from unknown web sites or social media adverts. But it often doesn’t matter how vigilant you are, it’s very easy to get caught out. The ONLY way to recover to the most recent virus free/unencrypted data state is to use a secure, reliable regular offsite data backup solution. Many technical commentatators recognise that the biggest single thing to defeat ransomware is by having regular updated data backup.
Fortunately our customers have completely recovered from their malicious attacks and are back up and running again (and that includes a customer with more than 500Gb of data that was maliciously encrypted so they couldn’t access it as well as their backup software being cleared!) Make sure you are protected with basic security; make sure you don’t click on any dodgy links or emails; make sure you back up your data safely, securely and regularly.
